Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Overview of Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars or tooth number 8, are the last teeth to emerge, usually appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. Located at the very back of the jaw, they often lack sufficient space to grow properly, making them prone to becoming impacted, misaligned, or trapped in the jawbone. If not treated in time, they can lead to various oral health issues.
Wisdom teeth are located at the very back of the jaw, right behind the second molars (tooth number 7), near the jawbone, and play an important role in oral structure.
Wisdom teeth typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, marking the maturity of the dental system.
A person can have up to 4 wisdom teeth—2 in the upper jaw and 2 in the lower—depending on individual anatomy.
Wisdom teeth are also known as third molars, tooth number 8, or “forbidden teeth,” reflecting their unique role in dentistry.
Wisdom teeth help grind food like other molars, contributing to effective chewing and digestion.
Throughout evolution, the size of the human jaw has gradually become smaller, leaving limited space for wisdom teeth to grow. When there isn’t enough room in the jaw for proper eruption, wisdom teeth tend to grow crookedly or horizontally, leading to complications that often require timely extraction.
1. Red, swollen gums in the back of the mouth: Irritated, swollen, and painful gums are common signs when wisdom teeth start to erupt, affecting the back jaw area.
2. Difficulty opening or closing the mouth: The eruption of wisdom teeth can cause discomfort when opening or closing the mouth due to pressure and inflammation in the surrounding area.
3. Bad breath: Bacteria buildup from gum inflammation during wisdom tooth eruption can lead to bad breath, so maintaining good oral hygiene is important.
4. Swollen and sore cheeks: The cheek area near the wisdom teeth often becomes swollen and painful, especially when touched.
5. Headache and mild fever: Wisdom tooth growth can cause mild fever due to gum inflammation and fatigue. A slight rise in temperature is normal, but a high fever may indicate an infection and should be evaluated by a dentist promptly.
6. Loss of appetite due to pain: Sharp pain while chewing and general fatigue may reduce appetite, especially when food touches the swollen gums, causing noticeable discomfort.
Impacted, misaligned, or trapped wisdom teeth: When wisdom teeth grow in the wrong position, causing discomfort or affecting jaw structure, timely extraction is necessary to avoid complications.
Decayed or severely inflamed wisdom teeth: Cavities or severe gum inflammation around wisdom teeth require removal to protect oral health and prevent further spread.
Wisdom teeth causing crowding of other teeth: If wisdom teeth exert pressure and shift other teeth, extraction is an effective solution to maintain an aligned smile.
Wisdom teeth damaging surrounding soft tissues: Swelling or soft tissue damage caused by wisdom teeth should be addressed through safe extraction at a reputable dental clinic.
Reduces pain, swelling, and gum inflammation: Removing wisdom teeth helps eliminate pain, swelling, and gum inflammation, bringing comfort.
Decreases risk of infection: Timely extraction prevents infections and helps maintain long-term oral health.
Effectively prevents tooth decay: Wisdom tooth removal lowers the risk of cavities due to difficult cleaning, keeping your teeth healthy.
Helps align other teeth: Extracting wisdom teeth allows other teeth to align properly, enhancing your smile’s aesthetics.
Tooth Decay from Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth are located deep in the jaw and often grow at an angle, making them hard to clean. Trapped food particles and bacteria can cause decay, which may spread to neighboring teeth and threaten overall oral health.
Gum and Periodontal Infections: Poor hygiene around wisdom teeth can lead to pericoronitis or periodontal disease, especially when the tooth is partially erupted. Symptoms may include pain, fever, bad breath, and in severe cases, abscess formation if not treated promptly.
Jawbone and Tooth Damage: Misaligned wisdom teeth can push into adjacent teeth, causing them to loosen and leading to jawbone loss. This may result in severe pain, swelling, and high fever; if left untreated, the infection could spread to the ear, neck, or even become life-threatening.
Disruption of Dental Alignment: Crowding caused by wisdom teeth can shift surrounding teeth out of position, affecting both aesthetics and chewing function. This can disrupt the harmony of your smile and daily comfort.
Use over-the-counter pain relievers: Medications like paracetamol (acetaminophen) can help ease pain and discomfort from wisdom teeth. Be sure to read the instructions and follow the recommended dosage on the package for safety.
Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling: Place an ice pack or a cold towel on the swollen area outside the cheek to soothe pain and reduce swelling effectively.
Rinse with warm salt water: Mix a teaspoon of salt with a cup of warm water, swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit it out. This method helps reduce inflammation and protect the gums while your wisdom teeth are coming in.
After having your wisdom tooth extracted, follow these steps to avoid complications:
1. Bite down firmly on the gauze placed at the extraction site for 15–20 minutes to control bleeding.
2. Apply an ice pack to your cheek to reduce swelling and pain after the extraction.
3. Take pain relievers as prescribed by your dentist to support the healing process.
4. Avoid sucking, touching the wound with your fingers, or disturbing the area to prevent infection.
5. Eat soft, easy-to-chew foods to minimize pressure on your jaw during recovery.
6. Avoid hard, salty, spicy, or acidic foods, carbonated drinks, and stimulants for the first two days.
7. Refrain from smoking for at least 3 days and avoid alcohol until the extraction site has fully healed.
Wisdom tooth extraction is performed under local anesthesia, so you won't feel any pain during the procedure. After the anesthesia wears off, you may experience mild pain or discomfort for a few days, but your dentist will prescribe pain medication and provide aftercare instructions to make you more comfortable.
Recovery time after wisdom tooth extraction is usually 1-2 weeks, depending on the complexity of the extraction and care. Swelling, pain, and sensitivity will decrease within a few days, but the wound takes several weeks to heal completely.
After wisdom tooth extraction, prioritize eating soft foods such as porridge, soup, yogurt, and avoid hot, hard, spicy, crunchy foods or carbonated drinks. Avoid chewing in the area where the extraction was performed for the first few days to protect the wound from damage.
Dentists often prescribe pain medication and antibiotics (if needed) after wisdom tooth extraction to prevent infection and aid in recovery. Use the correct dosage and duration as directed by your dentist for best results.
Wisdom tooth extraction is a safe procedure, but complications such as swelling, bleeding, infection, or swollen lymph nodes can occur. Follow post-extraction care instructions and contact your dentist immediately if you notice any unusual signs to minimize risks.
You should avoid strenuous exercise such as gym or jogging for at least 48-72 hours after wisdom tooth extraction to prevent bleeding or increased swelling. Rest and consult your dentist before returning to physical activities.
